Why We Started Sahuaro Dental Laboratory
Our story began with a desire to bring a fresh, patient-first approach to the local dental industry.
In the 1960s, the dental laboratory field in Tucson was small, rigid, and heavily insular. Around that time, there were roughly fifty dentists and twelve dental laboratories serving the entire area. A small, dominant group of labs dictated the methods, timelines, and habits for the local dental community.
But we saw a clear opportunity to do things better. Too many dental appliances were being produced with a rigid, one-size-fits-all mindset based on old lab routines rather than a deeper understanding of individual patient anatomy, aesthetics, and comfort. We believed that every patient deserved better, and that every dentist deserved a lab partner who would actually listen.
A Military Foundation of Discipline and Service
Our founder’s military service profoundly shaped the operational backbone of Sahuaro Dental Laboratory. In the military, discipline, attention to detail, and a sense of duty aren’t optional—they are everything. Serving in the healthcare sector during service life created a lifelong respect for the connection between technical precision and human well-being.
That disciplined background became the foundation of our laboratory. To us, fabricating a crown, bridge, or denture has never been just about following a prescription form. It is about understanding how that appliance will function when a patient eats, how it will look when they smile, and how it will directly impact their quality of life.

Because formal education or formal licensure isn’t universally required to own a dental lab, industry standards can vary wildly. From day one, we refused to build our laboratory on guesswork or hand-me-down habits. We wanted to build it on formal education, clinical science, and a transparent code of ethics.
We shared this vision with local dentists who felt limited by the generic appliances coming out of the dominant labs at the time. These doctors needed a laboratory that cared about consistency, custom tailoring, and clear communication. That is the collaborative role we stepped into in 1965, and it is the role we proudly maintain today.
